Pitbulls Puppies - Breed Standard
Pitbulls should be well balanced, muscular, active and agile and have a great strength for their size. The average weight for dogs is 12.7-17 kg (28-38 lbs); bitches weigh 11-15.4 kg (24-34 lbs). Pitbulls are from 14 to 16 inches high at the withers; height is related to weight. They should be fearless, bold and totally reliable. According to the breed standard, these dogs should have broad skull with short muzzle, short foreface, distinct stop, and very pronounced cheek muscles.
The eyes should be dark or related to the coat color. They are round, of medium size and set to look ahead. Ears should be rose or half picked. Jaws should be very strong; teeth are large and sharp. The scissor bite is preferred.
Legs should be straight, parallel when viewed from behind, set wide apart and well boned. Shoulders are massive and laid back with no looseness. Feet should be well padded and of medium size, with dark nails. The ribs are well sprung; the chest is well defined and muscular. Tail in purebred Pitbulls should be of medium length, low set and tapering. It should not curl much.
The coat of this breed should be short, smooth and close, which was very important in times, of dog fighting. The acceptable coat colors of Pitbulls are solid white, red, black or blue and bi-color with any shade of brindle with white. Liver color and black and tan pattern are undesirable.
Pitbulls Puppies - Living Conditions
Pitbulls are very adaptable and usually do well in urban living provided with enough exercise and a large yard to burn off their excessive energy. Mature dogs of this breed are couch potatoes, but puppies may be quite naughty. Pitbulls reach maturity at the age of 2-3 years and remain playful all their life, so they need a lot of exercise not to become bored and overaggressive.
